Our Rapid Response
Our Rapid Response

AN URGENT PROBLEM: The government’s immigration enforcement, detention, and deportation policies are increasingly arbitrary and overly punitive and the suffering these policies induce is not limited to just one individual. Rather, the effects of tearing someone away from his or her community are borne by the person’s family, friends, neighbors, employer, co-workers, congregants, and others. Most importantly, the erosion of basic principles upon which our country was founded, including the proposition that every person is guaranteed equal protection under the law, is a threat to every American

Our model is simple. When someone has been unlawfully or unjustly detained, our response is immediate and multilayered:

1

We provide emergency relief in the Federal Courts via tactical, client-focused litigation to stop imminent deportations and secure the release of the person detained. In many cases, RDN must draft and file cases within a matter of hours.

2

We engage the community to be part of the defense strategy. We work with community organizations, local and state officials to mobilize community members to attend the client’s court hearings. This show of community support not only demonstrates to the presiding judge the client’s importance to his or her community, but also invites public awareness and scrutiny of the government’s unlawful practices.

3

We recruit and mentor lawyers from law school clinics and leading law firms as co-counsel to help represent the client on a pro bono basis. Through these partnerships, lawyers with less immigration and litigation experience are able to build expertise, and Sarah and Gregory are able to leverage their capacity and focus their efforts on emergent matters.

OUR MODEL IS

SIMPLE

1

WE SEEK EMERGENCY RELIEF in the Federal Courts via tactical, client-focused litigation to stop imminent deportations and secure the release of the person detained, often in a matter of hours.

2

WE ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY to be part of the defense strategy. We work with community organizations, as well as local and state officials, to mobilize community members to support the client at court hearings. This also invites public awareness and scrutiny of the government’s unlawful practices.

3

WE RECRUIT AND MENTOR LAWYERS from law school clinics and leading law firms as co-counsel to help represent the client on a pro bono basis, allowing lawyers with less immigration and litigation experience to build their expertise.
